At the JPI HDHL Management Board meeting on June 12 & 13 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Carlos Martinez Riera officially took over from Pamela Byrne as chair of the JPI. Pamela Byrne, who is the CEO of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, took up the position of chair in the summer of 2013 and has made a huge contribution to putting the JPI HDHL on the map.

During the past 5 years, 42 projects were funded, 5 new countries joined the JPI (including 3 from outside the EU) and the reach of our website and social media channels significantly increased, to name a few things.

Building on these achievements, Carlos Martinez wants to focus on facilitating the access of researchers to JPI HDHL activities and maximising the impact of research results. A challenge also lies ahead in positioning the JPI in the increasingly complex European R&I landscape and the next framework programme.
As coordinator of the International R&D and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia, having previously held high-level executive and advisory responsibilities at the European, national and regional level, he brings a lot of relevant experience to the table. And so the JPI would like to warmly welcome Carlos Martinez and extend many thanks to Pamela Byrne, wishing her all the best for the future!
