FUSE network to connect knowledge on food processing, health and sustainability
How does food processing affect human health and the sustainability of our food systems? While the debate about ultra processed foods continues to grow, the available evidence remains fragmented and views are often divided. The new FUSE network, which will be funded by HDHL, aims to bring this knowledge together and support informed action.
In January 2026, HDHL launched the Knowledge Hub call “Food Processing Policy Implementation Network” as part of the Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action HDHL Food4Health. The call aimed to establish a European, multidisciplinary network to develop a robust and policy relevant understanding of the relationship between food processing, human health and sustainable food systems.
The call followed a two-stage procedure. First, Expressions of Interests were submitted by interested experts. From these submissions, 22 applicants were selected to continue to the second stage. They took part in a networking meeting in May 2026 and worked together during and after the meeting to develop one joint proposal. Following a positive funding decision, the FUSE Network will begin its activities in early 2027.
The experts participating in the network are based in Ireland, Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden.
The FUSE network will establish a European Community of Practice. Researchers at different career stages will work with policymakers, industry representatives, and civil society organisations. Together, they will identify priority themes, bring together evidence from different disciplines and examine the implications of food processing for health, sustainability, resilience and equity. They will also identify important gaps in current knowledge.
Through dialogue and collaboration, the FUSE network plans to develop an open evidence database, evidence informed policy guidance and a shared strategic research agenda. By connecting with existing European initiatives, the network aims to create a foundation for collaboration that continues beyond the project period.
More information about the FUSE network and its activities is available on the project page and will be updated throughout the projects’ runtime.
