DEDIPAC

Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity; Knowledge Hub to integrate and develop infrastructure for research across Europe

From December 2013 until December 2016 the research network ‘DEDIPAC’ was active. DEDIPAC stands for ‘DEterminants of DIet and Physical ACtivity’. The main goal of DEDIPAC was to establish a research network (Knowledge Hub) of researchers from different countries and different disciplines who jointly study the measurement methods, determinants and interventions of dietary, physical activity and sitting behaviours. In the past three years, almost 300 researchers in 68 research institutes from 13 European countries were working together in DEDIPAC.

The research within DEDIPAC was divided into three pillars:1) measuring dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, 2) understanding the determinants of these  behaviours and 3) studying interventions to improve these behaviours. Within these pillars the work was divided into smaller subgroups and tasks. All with the ultimate objective that Europeans will have the motivation, abilities and opportunities to eat healthier, sit less and move more.

Highlights

The most important accomplishments of DEDIPAC are:

  • A network of over 300 European researchers from different countries and disciplines.
  • Insight in the quality of existing measurement methods of dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviours, summarised in an online toolbox.
  • Models depicting the current knowledge base of determinants of dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviours, which will inform and inspire future research.
  • An online toolbox for the development, implementation and evaluation of interventions to promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • The first steps towards a cross-European surveillance system regarding dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and their determinants.
  • In October 2016, the final DEDIPAC symposium brought together almost 200 researchers, policy-makers and other interested parties.
